Memories

The record of your life: how do you find it?

Almost everyone has one: the record of their life. The song that takes you somewhere else within two beats, to a campsite in France or the car on the way to your first job. Some people know right away which one it is. Others are torn between three, or have never really thought about it.

How to recognize it

The record of your life doesn't have to be the best record you know. It's the one you sing along to right away, or the one that catches in your throat when you hear it unexpectedly in the supermarket.

It usually belongs to a certain time: the summer you were sixteen, your first year away from home, the year you moved in together. A song often brings a period like that back more sharply than a photo.

If you don't know

Then start with the time instead of the music. Pick a year that mattered to you and look up which records were in the charts back then. On this site you can look up a song like that and listen to a preview, without logging in.

Torn between two? Put them both on your list. You can decide later which one goes first.

Why four more belong next to it

The record of your life is often from way back. The other four can be from later: something from the years with young kids, from a trip that stayed with you, or a song from last year that you already know will last.

Whoever reads your list gets to know you a little. Five records do that better than a playlist of three hundred, because with five you had to choose.

Ask someone else too

On My Last Record you save your five for later, with a few sentences for each record about why it belongs. Share the list with your partner, your kids or a friend, and ask about theirs right away. The record of someone's life can easily fill an evening of conversation.

Does the record of your life have to be an old song?
No. Music from when you were young is strongly tied to memories, but a song from last year can be it just as well.
Can I change my choice later?
Yes, whenever you like. You can swap records and rearrange the order.
Can I listen without an account?
Yes. You can search, listen to previews and choose without an account. You only need your email address to save.

Music first. The rest can wait.
